July 3, 1951 - September 29, 2024
Sharon passed away surrounded by friends and family in Whitehorse, Yukon. She was predeceased by her life partner of 36 years, Boyd Gillis, in November 2023. They were both greatly loved.
Sharon is survived by her three siblings Bill (Donna), Robert (Nena) and Cathy (Buddy) and her four nieces: Serena, Sara Maya, Dallas and Pearl; and by Boyd's sister Sandra Sutherland and her children Michael Sutherland, Shawn Sutherland and Kim Grossman and families.
Sharon was born in Victoria, BC to Pearl and Bill Edmunds, the second oldest and a force to be reckoned with. She grew up on the west coast and maintained strong ties throughout her life.
Sharon had a great group of friends in Victoria — they played baseball, held themed parties and spent many days swimming at Shawnigan Lake.
Sharon came north in 1976 to work at Bennett Lake, BC train station. The Yukon became her home in 1977. In Whitehorse she had many wide-ranging jobs and adventures, including learning to silkscreen at Tundra Graphics. Sharon was a pitcher with the Tundra Graphics team, and spent many happy hours playing baseball and enjoying the
outdoor northern life.
Her creative spirit was evident at a young age. Sharon's mother taught her to sew, and Sharon's experiments with form and function, colour and texture informed her artistic passion. She became an exceptional goldsmith and jewelry maker and continued to collaborate on goldsmithing design and production ideas after she moved to Dawson City.
In 1987, Sharon relocated from Whitehorse to Dawson City. She went to visit friends who were mining near Dawson and met "Gorgeous Boyd" Gillis, who became her life partner and fellow adventurer. Sharon worked for Princess Cruise Line and was a court clerk and master gardener, and ran her own lunch business, "Sharoni's".
Boyd and Sharon worked hard to build up Northern Kat, and then later Northern Superior. Boyd and Sharon traveled to many places around the world on cruises, and made trips to Brazil, Mexico and Spain, collecting keepsakes and memories along the way. They lived, worked and played in Dawson City for 32 years until 2017, when they moved to Whitehorse.
Sharon loved her family, friends, art and animals. She was an exceptional friend and a passionate artist, creating beauty wherever she went. She was also a dedicated volunteer who gave back to the community in many ways.
A true friend to so many, her dinner parties were full of love and laughter. During the music festival in Dawson City the gathering in her yard was the party of the season, full of tents, food, fun and music.
Sharon was beautiful, kind, funny and fiery. We are grateful that that we were able to share our lives with her and
with Boyd. We miss them both and hold their laughter in our hearts.
Sharon shared this passage from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, with us before she passed:
"We don't know about tomorrow," said the horse, "all we need to know is that we love each other."
