May 25, 1930 - June 19, 2020
Roy William Lawrence passed away peacefully on June 19, 2020 at Whistle Bend Place having just celebrated his 90th birthday.
Roy was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England on May 25, 1930. He was the fourth of six children in a working class family. Having survived the blitz in London and gone to work at the age of 14, Roy worked in a drafting office as a "gopher" until someone noticed and nurtured his ability to draw. Subsequently, Roy was as draftsman and drafting teacher for the rest of his working life.
Roy brought his wife, Joan, and daughter, Ruth, to Canada in 1956 for the opportunity to make a better life. The family settled in Toronto. After retirement, Roy and Joan moved to Newmarket and then Barrie. In 2013, after Joan passed away, Roy made the move to Whitehorse where he spent his final 7 years surrounded by his daughter's family including 3 great-grandchildren.
He also found the time to paint with water colour and completed many Yukon scenes.
Roy was a quiet, kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by Ruth and George; Adrienne and Charlotte; Mark, Angie, Emma and Ben Nassiopoulos in the Yukon and Mark, Christine, Matthew and Marissa Lawrence in Ontario.
A celebration of life will be held at Whistle Bend Place at a later date.
