June 20, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lloyd Atkinson, a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Lloyd passed away on June 20, 2025, at Whitehorse General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Lloyd was born in 1947 in Vermilion, Alberta, to Gordon and Katherine Atkinson. He was the second of five children. His early years were spent in Haines Junction, Yukon, until the family moved to Surrey, BC, in 1956. In 1961, the family relocated to 48 Mile (Pleasant Camp) on the Haines Road, where Lloyd's father worked at the oil pump station. They returned to Surrey in 1964, but Lloyd's heart remained in the North. In 1966, he returned to the Yukon, where he built a fulfilling life.
Lloyd held a variety of roles over his lifetime. From 1969 to 1978, he worked as a salesman at Taylor Chevrolet Oldsmobile. He then became a partner and co-owner at Yukon Honda from 1979 to 1991. Later, he worked as a driver for Esso and drove school buses. For the last 21 years of his career, Lloyd ran his own successful business at Marsh Lake, reflecting his skills and love of the Yukon.
Lloyd will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 40 years, Carolyn Atkinson; his children, Michael (Teri) and Dawn (Jason); his cherished grandchildren, Michael, Michaela, Ryan, and Kassia; and his great-grandchild, Sophia. He is also survived by his sisters, Janice, Valerie (Jeremy), and Jeannie (Charlie), as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Katherine Atkinson and his brother, David Atkinson.
Lloyd's warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched many lives and will be remembered always.
A celebration of life for Lloyd will be held on July 26th, 2025 at the Marsh Lake Community Centre from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
