December 30, 1960 - June 15, 2019
It is with great sadness, we announce that Karen lost her battle with Cancer on June 15th, 2019.
She was the beloved youngest child of Fred and Rosalie Meier, born December 30th, 1960. Karen was predeceased by her father, her brother Kenneth and her grandparents. She is survived by her husband, Peter, daughter Lauren, Mother Rosalie, brother Doug (Sandra) and sister Suzan (Roland). She is also survived by her niece Erin (Mitch), nephews Jeff (Trish) and Drew (Cassandra). She is mourned by her step children Dean (Carol) Samantha (Terry) Kimberly (Bruce) and all their children.
Karen was at the centre of a close knit family and had many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was born and raised in Campbell River and graduated from Carihi. Her post secondary education was at BCIT.
In the early 1980's Karen moved to Dawson City and worked in the hospitality industry and at a mining camp. She left there after several years and relocated south. She taught at Technical School in New Westminster and in Hotel Administration in Victoria.
Karen moved back to Dawson City in 1997. In 1998 Peter and Karen were married and Lauren was born in 2000. She managed their family business, the Eldorado Hotel.
When she was diagnosed with her illness, she fought the good fight and had surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She seemed to be doing well and we all thought she would beat this illness. When it came back, Suzan went to Dawson and cared for her with the assistance of Lauren and Karen's many friends especially Dina Grenon. With their help, Karen was able to stay at home until her passing. Doug made 2 trips to Dawson to support his sisters.
Our thanks to Doctors Sally MacDonald, Sheila Curran, Zoey Zimmerman and all the medical Staff at the Whitehorse and Dawson Hospitals who did so much for Karen.
There will be a Memorial service at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Dawson City, Yukon on August 12th at 4 pm with the Venerable Laurie Munroe officiating. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the Eldorado Hotel.
No flowers by request. Please make any donations to Breast Cancer Research, Canadian Cancer Society.
