In loving memory ~

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Cameron Widrig on April 20th at age 66. Cameron fought a courageous battle with an auto immune disease for many years and was feisty and clear- eyed to the very end.

Cameron lived a fascinating life, full of adventure, change and challenge. Born in Tofino, British Columbia, he grew up in Lockeport on the South shore of Nova Scotia. Always completely at home in the outdoors, he loved fishing for brook trout, hunting black ducks, camping in the outback and canoeing many local rivers. He had a great deal of charisma and made friends easily.

Cameron was a dreamer and possessed a very restless spirit. He moved north to the Yukon Territory in his late teens. There he became an accomplished hunting guide in the Cassiar Mountains, capable of handling a horse, a rifle, drunken clients and a skinning knife. He soon moved on to aviation, flying Otter floatplanes commercially out of Watson Lake to Nahanni National Park and other northern destinations. It was in Watson Lake that he met his wife Laurelle ( nee Jamieson) and they went on to have three wonderful children.

In the early 1980's Cameron once again felt the need for a new challenge. He moved his growing family back to Nova Scotia, eventually settling in Lunenburg. He became a successful commercial fisherman, specializing in offshore clams.

Years later, Cameron made another major life change, moving to Northern Quebec. He spent several rewarding years there, indulging his passion for wilderness fishing by guiding clients to huge trout.

In 2012 Cameron's final move was to sunny Sacramento, California. He became an American citizen and worked for Pacific Gas & Electric as a Senior Analyst in the pole line maintenance division. More recently, retirement beckoned. He planned to enjoy retirement between his new home near San Juan Puerto Rico and visits with his children and grandchildren in the north.

Cameron was predeceased by his father, Ralph Widrig and his ex-wife Laurelle (Jamieson). He will be deeply missed by his family; mother Bonnie Dalziel, daughters Taylor and Hailey Widrig (Kenta Gauthier), son Ford Widrig (Lynette Didur), grandsons Edward Ritcheson and Robin Widrig, granddaughter Maeve Widrig, Siblings- Chris, Kevin, Colin, and Charles Widrig, and sister Cara Smith.
