1928 - 2024
During her 96 years of life, Elizabeth (aka Bette, Liz) was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surrounded by family, she passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Elizabeth was primarily raised and schooled in the lower mainland of B.C. In 1947, she travelled to the Yukon where she met Fred Blaker, the future first Fire Chief for the City of Whitehorse. Fred and Elizabeth married in 1949 and raised six children in Whitehorse.
As her family grew and gained independence, Elizabeth's desire to pursue personal interests followed. Her ability to coax the most incredible flower gardens from Yukon soil was inspiring, and the aroma of her baking bread, cookies and Christmas cakes filled the neighbourhood. An avid bowler, she befriended many newcomers to the sport. Bowling banquets and award ceremonies could always count on Elizabeth's helping hand. Never one to miss an opportunity to share a kind word and a smile, she joined the Women's Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed bringing a little joy to the hospital's many patients. Elizabeth was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Yukon Order of Pioneers. And always, there was the pursuit of a good cup of tea and books to be read and shared.
Predeceased by her husband in 1997, and her grandson Matthew in 2016, Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered by her children Phillip Blaker (Sharon), Cheryl Baxendale (Ken), Susan Priest (Ross), Richard Blaker (Sheri), Dennis Blaker, and Viki Ruttan (Terry), her 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many friends.
The family wishes to thank Whistle Bend and Thomson Centre staff for their excellent care and compassion.
At Elizabeth's request, there will be no service.
