The Yukon RCMP has offered an update on arrests made in relation to an alleged targeted home invasion and a hit and run on a city snow removal dump truck in January 2023.

On June 28, police issued a press release with additional information on an apprehension that took place this past winter near Second and Fourth avenues in downtown Whitehorse. Per the release from police on Feb. 16, that situation ended “peacefully” following an increased police presence in the area.

Now, police can elaborate on the outcome of the relevant investigations. As noted in the recent release, RCMP believed those two cases — the home invasion and the hit and run — to be related.

On Jan. 24, 2023, at 10 p.m., a Whitehorse resident reported to police that they had found a bullet in their living room and a hole in the wall, according to police. The resident who made the call figured the bullet went through the wall from a neighbouring residence, so police carried out a search warrant on an adjacent home. Police concluded that home had been broken into earlier that day. The victim who lived there told police two masked-and-armed men “pushed their way into the house and assaulted him” with a handgun when a gun was fired. No one was hit by the stray bullet and police believed the home invasion was targeted.

The release continues to describe how earlier on the morning of Jan. 24, 2023, at 4:26 a.m., Whitehorse RCMP attended a report of a two-vehicle crash at the Two Mile Hill Road and Alaska Highway intersection. Police said a white Dodge Ram truck had collided with a City of Whitehorse snow removal dump truck. The two people in the truck ran away. The driver of the city work vehicle believed one of the truck’s occupants was carrying what appeared to be a gun. Police believe the truck’s occupants were picked up by a vehicle in the Canada Games Centre parking lot.

On Feb. 16, RCMP arrested Lorne Ryan-MacKinnon in downtown Whitehorse. He was charged with careless use of a gun, assault with a weapon, kidnapping while using a restricted gun, dangerous operation of a conveyance and break and enter at a home.

On April 22, Victoria Police in British Columbia arrested Dalton Prasloski on a warrant for his arrest. He was returned to the Yukon by the RCMP. He faces the same charges as Ryan-MacKinnon, except dangerous operation of a conveyance.

The courts have yet to weigh in on the matters, as of the June 28 update from police. Both men were let go on court-ordered conditions and both have since been arrested and charged for fail-to-comply violations.

The release notes that most recently, Ryan-MacKinnon was arrested on May 15 and released on June 24 for time served for the fail-to-comply charge. Prasloski, who was arrested for failing to comply, remains in custody.
