Mounties in the Yukon have arrested an American traveller at the Whitehorse international airport for allegedly illegally importing a restricted gun.

Yukon RCMP communications confirmed to the News by email that Canadian Air Transport Security Authority from the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport notified RCMP on Jan. 8 at around 4 p.m. that they had found a handgun and ammunition in the checked baggage of a man from the United States.

RCMP arrested the man in relation to the “unlawful importation of a restricted firearm.”

RCMP don’t believe there was a risk to public safety, per police.

Police said the American man is scheduled for bail court in Whitehorse on Jan. 9.

Police are expected to issue more information via a press release on Jan. 10.
