The territorial Liberals’ leadership convention to elect a new leader is set to take place on June 19 as the party looks forward to a new chapter. The Yukon Liberal Party announced the date in a press release on the evening of May 8 which also noted that the vote will use a ranked preferential ballot.
The announcement comes the day after Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai announced he will be stepping down as party leader and will not be not running for a third term as Porter Creek South MLA.
He will stay on as premier and party leader until a new party leader is named. He will remain MLA until the next territorial elections, which must be held on or before Nov. 3.
Candidate nomination forms for the leadership race are due on May 29, per the release.
According to the party's website, the executive met to set out the details of the leadership race. The convention will be held in Whitehorse.
In-person voting by party members will take place at the convention. Proxy voting will be available for those who can’t attend in person.
Multiple rounds of voting may need to be held in order to determine the new leader, as noted in the release.
“The Yukon Liberal Party looks forward to a strong leadership race that brings Yukoners together and focuses on the future of the territory,” reads the release.
The party president didn't respond to the News' interview request before publication.
