BGC Yukon (formerly the boys and girls club Yukon) and the Rotary Club of Whitehorse Rendezvous are looking for donors and ballers for their first ever hoop-a-thon fundraiser scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Yukon University Gym.

The fundraising event will consist of sponsored corporate teams and individuals shooting as many free throws as they can in 60 seconds

“Each hooped basket will be worth whatever amount has been pledged, or the total amount committed by a sponsor. The goal is to raise $10,000,” the event announcement reads.

80 per cent of the money raised will be going to BGC Yukon in support of their after-school programming with the balance going to the Rotary Club of Whitehorse Rendezvous in support of its community work.

Lindsay Cornell, the executive director of BGC Yukon, noted that the funds raised will support the organization’s work including the annual delivery of more than 50,000 meals. It supports 200 and youth children daily according to Cornell; the young people spend about 80,000 hours per year with healthy mentors.

“Community supports such as Rotary are vital to the continued success of BGC Yukon. Thank you to all our community members, shooters and our Rotary team,”Cornell said.

The rotary club is inviting businesses to support the event by donation or by signing up teams or individual champions to throw free-throws in the fundraiser.

“We are delighted to be bringing this event to the Yukon in support of BGC Yukon. For many years, the Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise has been successfully raising funds for a local youth organization. They have generously extended the program to other clubs. We hope this will be just the first of many hoop-a-thons in the Yukon to come,” said Kevin Rumsey, 2024-25 President, Rotary Club of Whitehorse Rendezvous.

The fundraiser is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
