Yukon curling team assembled for national Scotties and Brier tournament

The Yukon Curling Association hosted competitive matches from Jan. 10 to 12 to select teams to represent the Yukon at the Tim Hortons Brier and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts national curling tournaments

Yukon curlers have assembled teams to represent the territory on the national stage at the Brier and Scotties curling tournaments in Kelowna, B.C. and Thunder Bay in Ontario, respectively. For the second year in a row teams skipped by siblings Thomas and Bayly Scoffin will represent the Yukon at the national competitions

The Whitehorse Curling Club pitted two men’s and women’s teams against each other to compete for a spot on the Yukon rosters during playdown matches, which ran from Jan. 10 to 12.

The two Teams Scoffin emerged as the first men’s and women’s team to win the three games needed for victory in the territorial championships held at the Whitehorse Curling Club’s rink over the weekend, earning both teams a spot at the national events.

The Brier and Scotties are separate men's and women's curling tournaments sanctioned by Curling Canada.

The skips are Thomas Scoffin and Bayly Scoffin; the thirds are Kerr Drummond and Raelyn Helston; the seconds are Trygg Jensen and Kerry Foster; the leads are Joe Wallingham and Bailey Horvey.

Team Scoffin competed against Wallingham’s men’s and women’s team in a bid to be the first to win three out of five matches, according to Whitehorse Curling Club manager Bill Stanzeleit. Despite losing the first match on Jan. 10, the Scoffin women rebounded with back-to-back victories, ultimately leading their team to triumph.

“Whoever wins the Scotties represents Canada at the World Championships,” said Yukon Curling Association director Bob Holmes.

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts, held annually from Feb. 14 to 23, is Canada's national women's curling championship. It determines the national champion who will represent Canada at the World Women's Curling Championship.

The Montana's Brier, held annually from Feb. 28 to March 9, is Canada's national men's curling championship. It determines the national champion who will represent Canada at the World Men's Curling Championship.

The 2025 World Men's Curling Championship will be held from March 29 to April 6 at the Moose Jaw Events Centre in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, according to Curling Canada. The Women's Curling Championship will be held from March 15 to 23 at the Uijeongbu Indoor Ice Rink in Uijeongbu, South Korea.
