Humane Society puppies, Yukon University paper rockets and playground antics made up the sights and sounds at a little park in Whitehorse’s Riverdale neighbourhood this past Friday late afternoon and early evening.

The City of Whitehorse's Fridays in the Park was off to a lively start at Alsek and Blanchard Park on May 23.

The weekly event, which runs Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at different parks throughout the Yukon capital, kicked off its second season that day.

Gurmanpreet Kaur, the city's parks and public spaces coordinator, said the festivities are intended to connect children and families with community. They can play, learn from local organizations and discover city parks along the way.

More than 1,700 attendees participated in the events in 2024, Kaur said.

Kaur said the first Friday already had a better turnout than by the same time last year.

She said the parks team made some changes based on public feedback from last year, such as going with a later start and end time and altering some locations in 2025.

The upcoming Friday’s fun will take place at Hillcrest Park, followed by Goddard Park in Whistle Bend the week after, according to the schedule posted online. Parks will alternate until the final Friday at downtown’s Jim Light Park on Aug. 29.
