A 37-year-old Whitehorse man is dead following an Alaska Highway crash between a pickup truck and a tractor trailer in Whitehorse near Porter Creek on Oct. 26, according to Yukon RCMP.
A press release issued by Yukon RCMP on Oct. 28 doesn't name the man who died but police confirmed that he was the driver of the pickup truck. The RCMP offered condolences to the friends and family of the deceased and all those affected.
Police said the collision occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
Emergency medical services and the Whitehorse Fire Department assisted at the scene, where the man was found dead, police said.
A portion of the highway from Birch Street to Wann Road was closed to traffic and a detour was set up while an RCMP traffic analyst collected evidence, per police.
The road reopened by 5 p.m. on Oct. 26.
Police, along with the Yukon Coroner's Service, are still investigating, according to the release.
Chief coroner Heather Jones said by email that an autopsy will be held on the deceased driver.
Additional details won't be released at this time, she said.
The family has asked the coroner's office not to release the name for now, per Jones.
In an email update on Oct. 29, RCMP said the driver of the semi wasn't hurt.
