Whitehorse residents who get parking tickets over the next two weeks can go to their pantries rather than their wallets to make things right with the city, while supporting the local food bank and other worthy resources.

Beginning Nov. 26 and running through Dec. 10, the city’s Food for Fines program is back for its 18th year. A Nov. 26 PSA from the city explains that those who get hit with an expired parking meter or two-hour zone fine will have the option of donating food of equal or greater value to the ticket. Donated food should be non-perishable, with canned goods and dried foods like pasta and cereal listed as examples.

According to the city announcement, donations will go to the Whitehorse Food Bank, Kaushee’s Place and the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre.

Online payments for tickets issued between Nov. 26 and Dec. 10 will also be donated.

Donations in lieu of fines will be accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 11.

This is the 18th year the city has run the food for fines campaign.

According to the city, since the program was first launched in 2005 it has raised more than $101,000 in cash and food donations.
