A house fire tore through a home on Hanna Crescent in Whitehorse's McIntyre subdivision on the afternoon of June 3, prompting a swift response from fire crews.
Firefighters arrived to find a portion of the house engulfed in flames. All occupants had safely evacuated before crews reached the scene, according to officials.
“When we arrived, it was confirmed that everybody was out of the building, which was good news,” said Whitehorse fire chief Travis Whiting.
“Crews were able to achieve a quick knockdown and did an excellent job getting around all sides of the fire, limiting it to the building of origin.”
The blaze was successfully contained within a short period of time, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring homes. One adjacent property sustained minor siding damage from radiant heat, but no further structural damage was reported, Whiting said.
Whiting expected firefighters remained on scene for a couple of hours conducting overhaul operations, focusing on extinguishing lingering heat in the attic, an area Whiting described as particularly difficult to access and cool.
Whiting said one cat was rescued and received emergency care. He did not have information on the condition of other pets as of the time the News left the scene.
The City of Whitehorse later stated in a June 3 social media post that a pet was taken to a veterinarian, while others were lost in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
