Weird weather hinders but doesn't halt Whitehorse community garage sales

May 10 snowfall catches some sellers and buyers off guard but not everyone cancels plans

More than 80 garage sales were set to take place throughout Whitehorse’s Riverdale neighbourhood on May 10, according to Terence Tait’s 2025 community garage sale listings online. While some “die hard deal seekers” (as one Facebook user put it in the comment section) got at it, snow and rain put a damper on others’ plans.

Some postponed or cancelled, but hopeful customers could still be seen meandering through the sidewalks and streets and into the dozens of yards and garages that went ahead with sales that spring day.

In some cases, tents and tarps tied to trees and fences were draped over items lined up on tables and mats. Neighbours could be heard catching up, making sales and chatting about the unexpected snowfall.

Daniela and Ceilidhe offered free hot chocolate to passersby. Snacks sizzled on a nearby barbecue on another street. A few blocks away, Mike served up hot dogs and kids sold treats.

Someone who had plants for sale at the end of a driveway noted how much snow was coming down when they were preparing to set up earlier that morning.

Much of the snow on the ground in Riverdale melted by late morning. A risk of thunderstorms was in Environment Canada's forecast for the afternoon.
