There will be competition for mayor this upcoming election, but there won’t be much.

Thursday, the city closed nominations for the position of mayor and council.

Al Fedoriak will be contesting incumbent Bev Buckway for mayor. Meanwhile 12 people have put in a bid to run for council. Five of them are sitting on council already.

The seven newcomers to the race include Janet Brault, Michael Buurman, Graham Lang, Betty Irwin, Skeeter Miller-Wright, Ranj Pillai, and Ron Swizdaryk.

“There’s some people with interesting ideas in this mix. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes down,” said Norma Felker, returning officer for the city.

With nominations filed, campaigning for the positions of mayor and council can now officially begin.

No date has been set yet for the all-candidates debate.

The election is scheduled for October 15. (Vivian Belik)
