Two people were arrested in Strathmore, Alberta, Tuesday for the burning death of Gordon Seybold in Whitehorse last year.

A 31-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were arrested in the southern Albertan town after a 16-month-long investigation following the discovery of 63-year-old Seybold’s burned corpse.

Seybold was found dead in his Ibex Valley home on March 26, 2008 after a fire was reported at the household.

The male suspect has also been charged with arson. The pair are from British Columbia.

The Yukon’s major crime unit was the lead investigator in the crime, and the Southern Alberta District RCMP made the arrest in Strathmore, a town 50 kilometres east of Calgary, said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Don Rogers.

The investigation took police to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary, he said.

Strathmore RCMP would not comment on the arrests and Rogers would not confirm the identity of the male or the female.

Both individuals will be arraigned today by telephone from the Strathmore detachment to the justice of the peace’s office in Calgary, said Rogers.

Their names will likely be released this afternoon, he said. (James Munson)
