Traffic stop prompts drug bust

A traffic stop in downtown Whitehorse on Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a British Columbia man.

A traffic stop in downtown Whitehorse on Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a British Columbia man.

An officer stopped a taxi after the driver failed to stop fully at a stop sign. There was one passenger in the taxi, a 38-year-old from the Lower Mainland. He had committed a crime in the Yukon five or six years ago, and there was a warrant for his arrest, said Const. Christine Grant with the Whitehorse detachment. He had also broken a court order. He was arrested, and a search of the vehicle revealed a drug that the RCMP believe is cocaine, a press release said.

The man appeared in territorial court on Wednesday for charges of possessing drugs for the purposes of trafficking. The RCMP is not revealing the amount of the drug in the man’s possession.
