In less than an hour on Saturday afternoon Yukon RCMP charged three people in Whitehorse with impaired driving.
Police report that between 4 and 5 p.m. officers were called to the three different scenes.
“It’s a really busy time of day,” said Cpl. Shawn Pollard, the head of Yukon RCMP’s traffic services division.
“And Saturday, I don’t think you could pick a busier time, you know? Everybody’s out, everyone’s out with their kids, everybody’s out doing stuff on a Saturday afternoon.”
At around 4:15 a 31-year-old man was charged in Porter Creek. In that case, police were called to a fight in the area when one of the people drove off, Pollard said.
About 20 minutes later, the driver in a pick-up truck in Copper Ridge lost control, driving across a lawn and hitting an electrical box and then a car parked in the driveway, said RCMP Const. Dean Hoogland. A 26-year-old driver was charged in that case.
“It was in Copper Ridge and there were children in the area, apparently,” Pollard added.
At about 4:40 p.m. on the Hamilton Boulevard extension, a third driver, a 26-year-old man, was pulled over and charged.
All three drivers were charged with impaired driving and having their blood alcohol content over 0.08 per cent, Pollard said.
On top of that, they were given 90-day driving suspensions and their vehicles were impounded for a minimum of 30 days.
“Boy oh boy, what else can we say?” Pollard said when asked if he had a message for the public.
“I think I’ve said it all over the years here... We’re just not winning. I don’t know what else we do. I’m kind of lost for words. What else can we do?”
At least these charges mean that drivers are being taken off the street, he said.
