The Yukon RCMP has put out another call for information as the investigation into a March 2023 double homicide in the community of Mayo goes on.
Ben Symington, 35, and Michael Bennett, 22, were shot and died on March 11, 2023. The First Nation of Nacho Nyak Dun (FNNND) declared a state of emergency in the days after the two Whitehorse men were killed in Mayo.
RCMP were called to the C-6 sub-division near Mayo that morning where the two men were found dead, according to a press release. Police said the men were killed in the hours before police attended the scene.
Cpl. John Gillis of the Yukon Major Crimes Unit said in a press release that police believe that people are choosing not to come forward or cooperate with police.
“The investigation is progressing, but we believe there are still individuals with information,” Gillis said.
“We know there are individuals who have not been forthcoming with information, and others who are choosing not to co-operate with police. We are appealing to these people to come forward and speak with police to help provide answers and justice for the family and friends of Ben and Michael.”
In particular, RCMP is seeking information on a “vehicle of interest”: a large truck with a lightbar that is believed to have been in the area of the deaths on March 11, 2023.
“If anyone knows anything about this vehicle and any possible link to the investigation, police ask for them to come forward,” reads the release.
The day following the killings, Yukon RCMP said a 2010 Ford Escape from the scene was taken into police custody and police had asked anyone who saw the vehicle in Mayo on the evening of March 10 and morning of March 11 to contact RCMP.
