Soccer net safety legislation tabled

The Yukon government has proposed legislation to regulate the maintenance and use of moveable sports nets.

The Yukon government has proposed legislation to regulate the maintenance and use of moveable sports nets.

Five-year-old Jaedyn Amann died on July 4, 2012, when a soccer net at a school in Watson Lake collapsed on her head.

The new legislation will require that certain maintenance and safety standards for the use of soccer nets at public recreation facilities are met.

Those specific standards will be set out in the regulations that are to go along with the legislation, which have yet to be announced.

Under the legislation anyone who makes a soccer net available for public use would be subject to a fine of up to $500 if they fail to ensure that the net meets safety standards.
