Environment Canada is warning of heavy snow today and tonight in a snowfall warning that covers the Haines Road and the South Klondike Highway from Carcross up to the White Pass.

Snow is already falling on Whitehorse and the surrounding area but it is expected to pile much higher on the mountain passes with the snowfall warning calling for between 20 and 30 cm accumulating today and overnight.

Gusty winds may lead to snow drifts and the forecaster says travel conditions are "deteriorating."

"If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight," the advisory reads.

The winter weather is being pushed up from the Gulf of Alaska.

Yukon 511 is already reporting poor visibility, snow, slush and ice on the section of the Haines Road leading up to the Alaskan border.
