I write to respond to a number of Whitehorse residents who are frustrated with the changes recently made to the drop-off area at Raven Recycling.

We have had a number of concerns raised about the new bins in place.

Raven is aware that it takes longer to recycle than it did a month ago. While, previously, people could dump mixed goods into fewer bins, now the bins are covered and we are asking people to sort into more varieties.

These changes reflect Raven’s desire to meet industry standards with regards to the quality of product we recycle. If commodities are protected from the weather and sorted properly, they bring in more revenue. This revenue is used directly to recycle more.

In other communities, covered bins are standard. We heard during the municipal election that Whitehorse residents want to recycle more and they want recycling to be more convenient. That is our goal as well.

We are pleased that the recently released Yukon Solid Waste Action Plan recognizes the need for improved recycling facilities and a state-of-the-art solid waste management system.

We will continue our job of making the system more efficient, cost effective and convenient by working closely with Whitehorse, the Yukon government, local businesses and citizens.

Finally, we would like to thank residents who continue to use the recycling centre as a way of diverting valuable resources from the landfill.
