One man unaccounted for after vehicle hits Yukon River south of Whitehorse

Police say they were informed about the vehicle in the water at the Lewes River Bridge shortly before 7 a.m. on Sept 16

According to the RCMP, a vehicle and trailer left the Alaska Highway at the Lewes River Bridge on the morning of Sept. 16.

Police say they were informed about the vehicle in the water shortly before 7 a.m. on Sept 16. 

"A truck pulling a trailer missed the bridge, and plunged into the Yukon River. RCMP, Golden Horn Fire Department and the Whitehorse Fire Department responded. RCMP remain on scene," the police statement reads.

Traffic flow through the area is not affected but the RCMP is advising motorists to follow speed limits in the area and reduce their speed when moving through areas with construction workers or emergency personnel present.

According to RCMP one of two men in the vehicle escaped and received medical treatment. The other remains unaccounted for. 

Both men are Phoenix, Arizona residents.

The RCMP is planning to recover the vehicle and has asked the public to avoid the area.
