An unidentified person found floating in the Yukon River on Sunday afternoon was murdered, say Whitehorse RCMP.

At 12:44 p.m., police responded to a tip from the public about a body found along the waterfront behind the Round House at the end of Wood Street.

The body was recovered from the water near the shore, where it had become stuck.

Investigators have been on the scene since Sunday afternoon and remained there Monday morning.

The preliminary investigation suggests foul play, said a police release.

The major crimes unit is not releasing the name of the victim pending notification of family.

Few details are being released.

Cpl. Glenn Ramsay couldn’t give the approximate age of victim, nor would he say if the body was male or female.

He didn’t want to speculate on how long the body had been in the river.

More details will be released in the future, he said.

The physical evidence was obvious enough to consider the incident a homicide, added Ramsay.

Police are asking people with any information about the incident to call RCMP at 667-5555, or anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
