Heavy rain in Whitehorse caused minor flooding at the Porter Creek Secondary School Wednesday night.

Contractors have been doing work on the school’s roof this summer.

On Wednesday, workers sealed up the area they were working on as usual at the end of the day, said Jennifer Gehmair, spokesperson for Highways and Public Works.

“The rain received was quite intense last night so it penetrated the seal and did leak into the building,” she said Thursday. “The damage is really minor, and the contractors assumed responsibility for all the damages, and will be covering all the costs.”

Summit Waterproofing Ltd. is in charge of the $645,095 partial roof replacement project.

Some towels will be have to be replaced, and some carpet got wet but was not destroyed, she said. A computer got wet and may have to be replaced.

The leak was towards the back of the school, near the shops, said Gehmair. School activity was not effected.

“It’s just a matter of cleaning a lot of it up.”
