The price of the new Whitehorse Correctional Centre has grown. It’s now stands at more than $70 million.
That’s $4.1 million above the initial price tag of $66.26 million.
“The project was fast-tracked,” said project manager Peter Blum. “That means, as you’re building, you’re designing at the same time. So that means some design and co-ordination issues came up from time to time.”
Some of the bigger cost overruns involved the laying of foundations. The price of cement and structural steel both took a jump during construction.
The new prison is expected to be completed by the New Year. Currently, workers are installing and testing surveillance cameras, monitors and communications systems.
