There are planned telecommunications outages for two parts of the Yukon for the early-morning hours of May 13.
In Pelly Crossing, between midnight and 2 a.m., landlines will be affected during a planned outage by Northwestel.
During the same time frame — midnight to 2 a.m. on May 13 — Northwestel has planned network maintenance for the Copper Ridge neighbourhood of Whitehorse. Cable internet and cable home phone will be affected by this work. Those using cable home phone will not be able to call 911 for up to 30 minutes during this time.
If you encounter an emergency during this time and need to contact first responders, first calling 911 as normal in case you’re able to get through, per recommendations from the Yukon government.
Should calling 911 as normal not work, people in Pelly Crossing are being told to then phone the 4444 local number for the health centre or to try the black phone at the health centre. People in the area can also try to approach an emergency vehicle on patrol or consider driving to one of the hospitals in Whitehorse, Dawson City or Watson Lake. In case you need police, report to the nearest RCMP station or detachment or vehicle on patrol.
For assistance, those in Copper Ridge should go to the Whitehorse General Hospital, the RCMP station on Fourth Avenue, or one of the fire halls on Black Street or at the intersection of Range Road and Two Mile Hill. They can also approach an emergency vehicle.
