Plan to boost council’s pay pushed ahead

City councillors gave first and second reading to a bylaw on Monday that would give a modest pay increase to the next city council.

City councillors gave first and second reading to a bylaw on Monday that would give a modest pay increase to the next city council.

Councillor John Streicker expressed discomfort with setting the pay for his own job, but Councillor Betty Irwin was quick to dismiss these concerns.

“I don’t have a problem looking at my own wage,” she said. “You have to be dispassionate and not take it personally.”

The 1.5 per cent pay boost would take effect after the next municipal elections. The mayor’s annual salary would increase to $87,942 from $84,100, while councillors would be paid $20,496, up from $19,600.
