Bradley Chambers was killed in a plane crash near Mayo on Thursday evening.

The 34-year-old pilot was from Duncan, BC.

There were no passengers on board the DHC-3 Otter, owned by Black Sheep Aviation.

The joint rescue centre in Victoria, BC received an emergency locator beacon signal at 5:26 p.m., March 31.

A helicopter and crew were dispatched to the site, roughly 70 kilometres east-northeast of Mayo, near Mayo Lake.

The chopper landed close to the crash site and the crew hiked to the downed plane.

They discovered that the pilot had not survived the crash.

The rescue crew was unable to extricate Chamber’s body from the plane.

Over the weekend, Transport Canada’s Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash site, said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Don Rogers.

“The body was removed and the coroner took over the remainder of the investigation.”

An autopsy is being done in Vancouver, said Yukon chief coroner Sharon Hanley.

It’s standard procedure in all air accidents, she said.

“People can have heart attacks or other medical issues, so we have to establish the cause of death,” said Hanley.

The autopsy should be completed by Tuesday, she said.

Transport Canada has appointed a minister’s observer who will keep the department informed of the progress of the safety board investigation, wrote Transport Canada spokesperson Amber Wonko in an email to the News.

“Additionally, Transport Canada will conduct a post-accident review of Black Sheep Aviation to verify compliance with aviation safety regulations,” she wrote.

“Transport Canada will take appropriate action should safety issues be identified through the (safety board) investigation or the department’s post-accident review of Black Sheep Aviation.”

Black Sheep Aviation owner Cam Drinnan refused comment at this time.
