The Yukon Liberal Party has scheduled a meet-and-greet event with the two candidates for party leader, but no leadership debate is planned, as far as the News is aware.
The meet-and-greet event is set for June 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Old Fire Hall in downtown Whitehorse, according to a press release issued by the party.
At the casual event that is planned, attendees will hear brief remarks from candidates Mike Pemberton and Doris Bill but no formal question-and-answer period will be held.
Pemberton is a local businessman and party insider. He portrayed himself as pro-business, while addressing the high cost of living Yukoners are facing. Pemberton suggested the party and ideology is going strong but needs “fresh eyes.”
Bill is a former reporter and ex-chief of Kwanlin Dün First Nation. She acknowledged “uncertain” times as the Liberals lead a “strong” economy. Bill emphasized the importance of strong mining regulations and environmental protections.
Both leadership hopefuls prioritized community safety.
Party members will vote for their leader at a convention on June 19.
Anyone is allowed to attend the meet and greet, the party said.
