New chief for Ta'an Kwach'an Brenda Sam won Monday's Ta'an Kwach'an election. Sam took 112 votes, beating Ruth Massie by 35. Richard Martin has been elected the new deputy-chief of the Ta'an Kwach'an Council, taking 111 votes to Julie Broeren's 73.

Richard Martin has been elected the new deputy-chief of the Ta’an Kwach’an Council, taking 111 votes to Julie Broeren’s 73.

One hundred and ninety people cast ballots in the election. No information on the number of spoiled ballots could be obtained from returning officer Lois Moorcroft before press time.

Sam and Martin began their duties of chief and deputy-chief Tuesday and will take an oath of office before the Elders’ Council.

The chief and deputy chief are elected to three-year terms.
