The NDP hopes to find a new chief of staff in the coming months.

Ryan Stewart, 33, has held the position since 2011.

He plans to leave the Yukon in the spring to complete a university degree in political science at Simon Fraser University.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve made the decision to head back down to Vancouver to finish a university odyssey I started many years ago,” said Stewart.

Stewart first came to the Yukon from B.C. in 2010 and returned in 2011 to help with the NDP’s election campaign.

The chief of staff is responsible for supporting the MLAs in everything from policy issues to administrative matters. A job posting will be issued in the coming days for the position.

Stewart may be back in the Yukon before long, he said.

“I plan to be a frequent visitor and certainly haven’t ruled out a return.”

He hopes to make it back this summer for his fourth-consecutive Dawson City Music Festival.
