Whitehorse RCMP say an officer was assaulted while trying to arrest Marcus Hickey, 34.

According to a release issued Oct. 22, Hickey struck an officer in the eye while resisting arrest on the afternoon of Oct. 16. Whitehorse RCMP and the Yukon Crime Reduction Unit were arresting Hickey on an unendorsed warrant for two counts of breaching a release order.

According to the B.C. Supreme Court online glossary, an unendorsed warrant is a warrant that has not been signed by a justice of the peace. This indicates the person arrested is to be held for court.

In the RCMP's telling of the events, Hickey struck the officer while resisting arrest. Both Hickey and the officer were assessed for minor injuries at the Whitehorse General Hospital, reads the release.

While being transported from the hospital to the Arrest Processing Unit, Hickey allegedly pushed police and attempted to grab items from an officer's belt. Hickey attempted to run away but was caught and arrested, according to police.

Hickey has now been charged with attempting to disarm a police officer, two counts of assault on a police officer, two counts of resisting arrest and escape of lawful custody. He currently has 31 charges before the court. He is expected to appear in court on Oct. 30.
