Libs promise new campus digs

Yukon’s Liberals would build a new college residence in Whitehorse if elected.

Digs at Yukon College’s Whitehorse campus are currently full, with a waiting list of students looking for a place to live, according to the Official Opposition.

Two Liberal contenders touted the benefits of building more student housing, and an on-site daycare, in a release.

“This is a much-needed, long-overdue project that will help all Yukoners,” said Cully Robinson, the party’s candidate for Whitehorse West.

The need to expand the residence was first identified four years ago, said Timothy Cant, the Liberal contender for Kluane.

“For students coming from the communities and for those coming from outside the territory to attend Yukon College, how are they supposed to focus on their studies if they’re too busy worrying about where they are going to live?” he asked.

“We’ve heard stories of some students that are discouraged from enrolling in post-secondary school because they aren’t able to secure adequate housing. That’s just wrong.”
