Legislature marks college anniversary

Members of the legislative assembly spoke at length this week to honour the 50th anniversary of Yukon College.

Members of the legislative assembly spoke at length this week to honour the 50th anniversary of Yukon College.

Education Minister Elaine Taylor mentioned that her father, mother, brother and son have all been students at the college, and she also has taken a number of courses herself.

“I have always been impressed by the professionalism delivered, by the calibre of teachers and instructors and by the variety of courses and programs being offered by Yukon College over the years.”

NDP MLA Lois Moorcroft spoke about her involvement with the planning of the Ayamdigut campus, which opened in 1988.

She was a part of an employee advisory committee that called for a childcare centre to become an essential feature of the college, she said.

“The childcare centre is still a success.”

“It would be easier for me to list in Dawson the people who have not taken courses at Yukon College,” said interim Liberal Leader and Klondike MLA Sandy Silver. “Anywhere you go in the community, its presence is known.”

The legislature also unanimously passed a motion Wednesday expressing continued support for the college, and in particular for mining innovation, cold climate technology development, climate change research and social justice initiatives.

Yukon College’s 50th anniversary party will be held tonight from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at the Ayamdigut campus in Whitehorse.
