David Laxton will serve as the Yukon legislature's next Speaker, Premier Darrell Pasloski announced on Friday.

David Laxton will serve as the Yukon legislature’s next Speaker, Premier Darrell Pasloski announced on Friday.

Laxton, a 55-year-old veteran and businessman, is the government’s MLA for Porter Creek Centre. It’s his first term as an MLA.

The Speaker’s main job is to referee legislative debates in an impartial manner. He only casts a vote to break a tie.

Opposition Leader Liz Hanson is expected to second Laxton’s nomination.
