Judge takes Justice Department to court over pay

Array

The Yukon’s top justice of the peace is taking the government to court for a pay raise.

Dean Richard Cameron is fighting back against a decision by the Justice Department that left him with a slightly lower wage after the last Judicial Compensation Commission in 2007.

That commission recommended a higher-than-normal pay for the justice of the peace because the workload is considerably heavier for the job in the Yukon compared to other parts of the country.

The government lowered the recommended wage and Cameron is claiming the decision is an attack on judicial independence.
