Johnny inquest delayed

One of the two inquests into deaths following treatment at the Watson Lake Hospital has been postponed.

One of the two inquests into deaths following treatment at the Watson Lake Hospital has been postponed.

Yukon’s chief coroner announced yesterday that the inquest into the death of Mary Johnny has been adjourned to Oct. 14 to 17.

Johnny’s family has recently retained a lawyer and the delay is to allow counsel to prepare for the inquest, Kirsten MacDonald said in a statement.

On Aug. 9, 2012, Johnny died of a bowel obstruction after being originally diagnosed as having alcohol withdrawal. She was 60 years old.

The Johnny inquest was one of two scheduled to be heard back-to-back next month.

Teresa Scheunert, 47, died June 21, 2012, after receiving treatment at the hospital.

Retired B.C. coroner Norm Leibel will oversee both the inquests.

The Scheunert inquest is scheduled for June 2 to 6.
