The Haines Road, from Dezadeash Lodge at the 193-kilometre marker to the Canada-U.S. border, will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 8 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Yukon Highways and Public Works announced.
The closure is due to the annual Alcan 200 Snowmobile Rally returning from Haines, Alaska. Racers will take off from the start line at the Canada-U.S. border, turn around at Dezadeash Lodge, and head back toward the United States, covering approximately 334 kilometres.
The rally will not be open to spectators out of concerns for safety, said Highway Public Works communications manager, Krysten Johnson. She added that Yukon Highway Public Works staff will be present at the event for maintenance and safety.
“To make sure the courageous snowmobilers are safe and can focus on the race, the Haines Road will be closed on Saturday,” the Feb. 4 announcement reads.
According to a ministerial order signed on Dec. 5, access to sections of the road scheduled for closure on Feb. 4 will only be permitted to those involved with the race.
