The mayor of Haines Junction has resigned six weeks into the job.

Michael Riseborough was elected mayor in the Oct. 17 elections.

According to Yukon government cabinet communications by email on Nov. 29, Riseborough advised Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn earlier that week about the resignation. They couldn’t provide an exact date at the time. Mostyn wasn’t available.

Two sources who spoke to the News under the condition that they won't be named said Riseborough left the post for health reasons.

The Municipal Act outlines that if a member of council resigns, dies or becomes disqualified, council must set a date for nominations to fill the vacancy, as Community Services communications analyst John Tonin pointed out.

That must occur between 30 and 45 days after the vacancy is declared. The council can set an earlier nomination period with a two-third majority vote. If multiple candidates are nominated, and there is a poll, the poll will be held on the third Thursday after the nomination, per the act.
