A leaking sprinkler system that impacted one of two operating rooms, forcing the Yukon Hospital Corporation to temporarily shut down some non-urgent and non-emergency surgeries, has been fixed, according to a Facebook post on the morning of April 14.

As a result, full operations are back at the Whitehorse General Hospital, Yukon Hospitals said on social media.

Those who had surgeries cancelled or postponed will be contacted by hospital staff to reschedule, per the post.

Surgeries were recently impacted for about two months by a surgical tool sterilization issue. On-site sterilization returned late last week, and the hospital returned to full capacity on April 7.

The leak was found on April 9 in the surgical services area. On April 10, the hospital corporation traced the leak to the sprinkler system. One of the two operating rooms was closed on April 10 and 11.

The News has asked for an update on the impact on surgeries in terms of the number of postponed procedures due to the leak.

“Over the coming months, we will be completing additional preventative changes to our sprinkler system in a planned fashion to minimize further service disruptions,” reads the Facebook post.
