The only elevator at a Yukon Housing Corporation-run apartment building for seniors in Whitehorse is up and running again.
After being broken down for about a month, since Dec. 19, 2024, it started kicking again after a temporary fix was implemented on Jan. 18, 2025, Jason Seaton, a spokesperson for the housing corporation, said.
A control panel on loan allowed the elevator to function ahead of the now-repaired control board being installed on Jan. 27, 2025.
Safe at Home Society temporarily loaned the corporation a compatible control board from one of two elevators not being used while renovations take place at the former Coast High Country Inn, according to Seaton.
As reported by the News, the Yukon Housing Corporation apologized to the tenants of the seniors’ residence along the waterfront for the impact. A security guard posted on site helped support residents with getting up and down the stairs while the elevator was out of commission.
The busted control board was fixed in Ontario by an independent engineering company with specific expertise in this area, per Seaton, who didn't name the company. The company works with Venture Elevator. The housing corporation worked with Venture Elevator to identify whether another control board in the Yukon could be repurposed.
The elevator itself is 36 years old. The News reported on its repeated malfunctioning in 2018.
Seaton said a public tender is expected to go out in March for elevator upgrades.
“The corporation is in the process of expediting the design and replacement of the mechanical and other components of the elevator,” Seaton said.
