Dredge closure condemned

Liberal MLA Sandy Silver took Tourism Minister Mike Nixon to task yesterday for failing to confront the prime minister directly about the funding cuts to Parks Canada.

Liberal MLA Sandy Silver took Tourism Minister Mike Nixon to task yesterday for failing to confront the prime minister directly about the funding cuts to Parks Canada.

Silver reminded members of the legislature of the historical and tourism value of Klondike’s Dredge No. 4 and the S.S. Klondike, where guided tours have been cancelled in response to the cuts.

Minister Nixon countered that he has been actively engaged with the issue, and quoted a motion he raised before the assembly on the matter in the spring.

He also referenced a similar motion put forward by Yukon Party MLA Stacey Hassard earlier in the proceedings.

Silver asked again why, if the minister is so concerned, did he not bring up the matter with Stephen Harper when he had an audience with in August.

Nixon mentioned that he bumped into Silver two weeks ago and asked him if he had any concerns, and he said no.

Silver scoffed and shook his head as the minister continued his answer.
