Dempster caribou hunt closed

The government has closed caribou hunting along a stretch of the Dempster Highway.

The government has closed caribou hunting along a stretch of the Dempster Highway.

The Porcupine caribou are not in that area right now, so the risk of hunting a member of the endangered Hart River herd is high, according to the Yukon Environment website.

No caribou hunting is allowed along the Dempster from the North Fork Pass through the Ogilvie River bridge.

The emergency conservation closure does not apply to the Tr’ondek Hwech’in or members of the First Nation of Na-cho Nyak Dun, who have hunting rights under their land claims agreement.

Closures on game management subzones 2-16, 2-23, 2-27, 2-28 and 2-39 will remain in effect until July 31, 2013.
