Three Crown corporations are being cut free from the Department of Community Services.

Yukon Housing Corporation, Yukon Liquor Corporation and Lotteries Yukon will soon be free of the department, the territory announced January 9.

The Crown corporations have shared policy and human resources staff with the department since 2002, when the Liberal government of Pat Duncan merged parts of the organizations.

“Community Services is a large department in the government and it makes sense for the Crown corporations to be set apart,” said Premier Dennis Fentie in a press release.

Ron MacMillian, who has acted as deputy minister of Community Resources for the past eight months, will continue to manage the Crown corporations.

Jeff O’Farrell becomes deputy minister of Community Services on January 26. He is currently assistant deputy minister of the sustainable resources division of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.

The changes require amendments to the Housing Corporation Act and Liquor Act, which are to be made when the legislature reconvenes.(John Thompson)
