Raven ReCentre in Whitehorse will be closing its public recycling drop off as of Sept. 15, 2024.

The City of Whitehorse has selected Whitehorse Blue Bin to provide new, temporary recycling services.

With the closure of Raven ReCentre’s public recycling drop off looming, city council decided to start a temporary recycling program earlier this year. The program involves both curbside recycling and a recycling depot at the Whitehorse landfill. Both will be operated by Whitehorse Blue Bin, according to the city’s recent press release.

Whitehorse Blue Bin is a private waste management company that operates in Whitehorse. According to its website, it offers recycling collection to residents for $25 a month.

The recycling depot will open on Sept. 10, and the curbside service should begin in December, according to the release.

Rates for recycling pick-up and drop-off are currently being reviewed by city council. On Aug. 26, councillors gave first and second reading to a proposed bylaw to charge $1 per bag at the depot, and $12.50 per month for curbside pick-up.

Details about fees, schedules and a sorting guide will be released in the weeks to come, per the release.
