Freestyle skiers from across Canada competed in freestyle events at Mount Sima for the Canada Cup Series, presented by Toyo Tires, from Dec. 6-8.
Mount Sima opened to the public on Dec. 6 and collaborated with Yukon Freestyle to prepare the hill for a series of Freestyle Canada-sanctioned big air and slopestyle events.
Skiers launched off ramps, performing mid-air acrobatic manoeuvres before touching down to be judged on height, technique and style. They also navigated a course featuring rails and gaps, focused on creatively, with judges evaluating technical ability and overall execution.
Eighty-five registered athletes from Quebec, Ontario, B.C. and Alberta took two runs during each event. Judges ranked their performances using a points-based system to determine which athletes moved through the heat stages and onto the finals.
In the final heat for the Big Air Open Women’s division, B.C. team’s Avery Krumme ranked first, beating her competitor, Eva Trottier from B.C. by 58.2 points.
The Open Men’s final heat saw Jacob Durepos from Ontario beat Cody Oldham for first place. Durepos was earlier selected by Freestyle Canada to compete at the 2024 Junior World Slopestyle and Big Air competition held in Livigno, Italy, as per Freestyle Canada’s website.
Durepos ranked 8th out of 78 competitors and lost to Norwegian, Frank Wahlstroem, according to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation’s online database.
Freestyle Ontario had a second club member on the podium for the Yukon Canada Cup’s overall rankings, with Cody Oldham taking second place. Quebec Slope team member, Gianni Biello, scored up to third place.
For the Slopestyle Open Women rankings between Dec. 7-8, Avery Krumme scored highest against Analise Perry. Krumme is from a B.C. club, and Perry from a Calgary Ski Club.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation’s online database also shows that Krumme competed in the 2024 Junior World Slopestyle and Big Air competition in Italy. She ranked fourth place, beating her competitor from Japan, Kiho Sugawara, by a margin of .33 on March 30.
The Yukon Canada Cup’s Open Men’s final was held on Dec. 8 and saw Quebec Slope club member Rémi Asselin take first place. He was followed by Ty Kargus from a club based in Calgary.
The results were provided in an email by Freestyle Canada’s events director, Charles-Antoine Morache.
