Brazen thieves recently stole an ambulance from the Whitehorse General Hospital parking lot.

The theft took remarkably little ingenuity.

“I believe it was open with the keys in it,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Mark Groves.

The Whitehorse RCMP are still trying to find the suspect. The theft occurred early Wednesday morning.

Police were called at 5:30 a.m. — that’s about an hour after the ambulance went missing.

The vehicle wasn’t on active duty. It was stationed in the hospital parking lot as a spare.

About 90 minutes after the thieves left the hospital in the rig, the ambulance was found at the side of Long Lake Road.

Forensic and canine units were dispatched, but were foiled — the culprits had fled the scene.

No damage has yet been identified on the vehicle, and it is believed that there were no medical supplies on board.

Emergency Medical Services refused comment.

If anyone has any information about Wednesday’s rogue ambulance, they can contact the Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5555.
